Poltrona Frau was founded in Turin in 1912 by Renzo Frau. The name “Poltrona Frau” derives from the Italian word for armchair, “poltrona” and “Frau”, the last name of its founder. From 1926 Poltrona Frau was appointed the supplier of the Italian Royal Family, the Savoia dynasty. In the 30’s Poltrona Frau became a true status symbol. From then on, this Italian furniture brand will finish all the most important and prestigious houses, grand hotels, the interiors for Expo Turin in 1928 and the luxurious transatlantic Rex, the pride of the Italian Navy.
1919 Armchair by Poltrona Frau
Renzo Frau’s original aim was to introduce exceptional tanned leather for use in furniture and automobile upholstery. In 1919 Poltrona Frau created one of its first successful chair designs, known as the 128, that was later called the 1919. This model was supposedly designed for Filiberto Ludovico of Savoy, Duke of Pistoia. Despite being created for a specific customer, the 1919 armchair became one of Poltrona Frau’s first and biggest public successes. This armchair is a reinterpretation of the classic bergere model. Its unique details include the addition of a specific extension to use as a footrest and a littler optional ashtray, designed for the Duke, a famous cigar smoker.

This elegant armchair was created in several versions, but its exclusive feature remains the soft and wide seat richly padded with goose down. Archibold’s structure and feet are made of steel, with a thin and light line. The breadth and depth of the seat is balanced by its thin feet for slender overall effect. In the Archibald armchair the leather upholstery, pleasantly wavy thanks to a series of vertical folds, is embellished along the edges and external surfaces by contrast stitching, giving it an extra touch of refined elegance. This model by Jean-Marie Massaud is the perfect combination of substance and form, boasting a comfortable and enveloping design ideal for relaxation and meditation.
